AND SHINE’s project manager Paola, a self-declared natural cosmetics fan, who is constantly asked to share her beauty tips with her friends, shares her favorite tried and approved DIY cosmetics recipes to naturally pamper face, body and hair in our blog.
“I started out researching natural beauty ingredients and how to make cosmetics myself, while growing up in the north of Colombia and being close to a great array of natural plants, seeds and scents. What has always inspired me, is how in almost all cultures around the world, natural skincare and beauty rituals are deeply rooted into tradition. Luckily for all of us, many of them have been passed along from generation to generations.
The Indian beauty culture for example enjoys great admiration from people all around the world, attracted by the country’s intrinsically unique interpretation and vision of beauty, deeply influenced by religious rituals and Ayurveda. In my recent travels to India, I found that the art of mixing takes on a whole new perspective there, from colors to spices to music, Indians know how to create one of the world richest and most admirable cultures.
If we look closely and take careful note, there are many DIY beauty hacks and beauty rituals to be discovered. Growing up, Indian girls see how their grandmothers and mothers use different natural ingredients to make their own face masks. Today, I want to explore an Indian face mask with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, that you can prepare easily and in no time!
If you want to enhance the effect of this face mask, you can use a gentle face scrub before to remove dead skin cells. Keep your eyes peeled for my DIY natural face scrub recipe, which will be published very soon! :)
So, let’s start to make your own face mask, but let's first talk about the benefits of yogurt and turmeric for your face:
Turmeric: For centuries, this ingredient has been linked to effective cosmetic benefits. Used in Hindu celebrations, this ancient powder belongs to the ginger family and is well-known for its antioxidant and anti-aging benefits, which over time can help against wrinkles.
In addition, it is considered a natural antiseptic with antibacterial properties, making it a perfect ally to help against breakouts and reduce scaring caused by it.
Turmeric is also considered an anti-inflammatory agent that targets the pores and calms the skin while it heals and moistures your skin, giving it a natural glow.
Yogurt: A refrigerator staple, natural yogurt contains a variety of components that are very helpful for the skin including amazing moisturizing agents. Its concentration of lactic acid hydrates the skin by helping it retain water and corrects uneven pigmentation. Lactic acids help fade blemishes as they exfoliate and renew the skin, making it look younger and brighter.
Yogurt also contains saturated fats, which help relieve irritated and itchy skin while soothing it against overheating and sunburns.
Constant use of yogurt in your beauty routine will help you against breakouts, acne and pimples, thanks to its concentration of zinc while its anti-inflammatory benefits will reduce puffiness.
How do I prepare my own beauty face mask:
When making cosmetics yourself, it is important to follow the correct proportions to make sure the mixture is suitable for your skin. Turmeric is a special spice, that may create heat when applied to your skin if the dosage used it too elevated. Make sure to follow the proportions below to enjoy this amazing recipe without any adverse reactions and always try a small amount on a small patch of skin before applying to your whole face. Prepare:
- 2 table spoons of yogurt filled to the rim, which will be around 50-60ml.
- ½ teaspoon of turmeric
Mix it up:
To make your own turmeric and yogurt face mask, prepare a bowl and add the yogurt, followed by the turmeric. Then mix everything with a spoon until you getting an even, light-orange colored mixture.
Extra Tip: Use the yogurt directly from the fridge. No need to have it at room temperature. You will see how the cooling effect creates a pleasant sensation on your skin.
How to apply:
- Clean your skin with your usual face cleanser
- Rinse thoroughly and towel dry
- Apply the whole mixture with your hands
- Massage carefully in circles as you apply it all over your face, leaving a rather thick layer. You may include the décolleté and neck as well.
- Leave on for 10 minutes
- Cleanse with water and face cleanser.
- Don’t forget to apply your moisturizer and sunscreen afterwards!
How often can you make your own face mask:
Every week would be ideal for your skin. Nevertheless, every two weeks is a good routine to keep.
